A Few Key Terms
| · Session | The period during which the House or Senate meets to consider the business before them. | |
| · At the Rise | Many committees will meet to consider testimony "at the rise." The House and Senate sessions generally begin at 4:00 P.M. Tuesdays through Thursdays. "At the Rise" means that the committee meeting will begin immediately following the adjournment of session on that particular day. | |
| · Cross Over Day | The day in April when committees must consider all bills filed prior to the filing deadline. Each committee, other than the House Finance Committee, may keep three bills, filed prior to the filing deadline, alive after cross over day. All others must be considered by the committee, transferred to House Finance Committee or they are deemed to be dead in committee. The Senate does not utilize this procedure. | |
| · Rule 17 Introduction (House Rule) | A representative may introduce a bill after the filing deadline if he/she provides two-days notice prior to the introduction and no other member of the House objects to the introduction. |
