"Why do I need a Lobbyist ?"

While the general public sometimes views lobbyists in a cynical mode, legislative consultants actually perform a valuable service for their clients and for state decision-makers. Issues are rarely black and white; they contain many shades of gray as stakeholders come to the table with different perceptions of reality.

Legislative consultants learn as much as possible about their client's position and then about the interests of the other parties involved with the issue. An effective lobbyist will then discuss the overall picture with government officials and attempt to craft a resolution that benefits his or her client while alleviating some of the concerns of the other parties. Of course, there are always situations where a common ground is not to be found, and each party must put its best case forward.

It is human nature to trust the word of individuals you know well. That is why lobbyists are helpful. Would you believe the word of your friend over the word of a complete stranger? The answer is "Yes!" Legislative consultants spend thousands of hours interacting with government officials - discussing issues, the state climate, and topics of concern - all to understand each official and the challenges they and their constituents face. Experienced lobbyists are usually effective because they have taken the time to get to know government officials personally. Furthermore, during those many hours, government officials learn which lobbyists are reliable as well as truthful. Trust is a factor of human nature.

You may not have the time to research an issue important to you, draft or re-draft legislation, or to meet with government officials to gain trust as well as believability; Martiesian & Associates can work with you to get your message to decision-makers in order to effect policy in the State of Rhode Island.
